Archaeometric study of archaeological pottery from the Ventarrón-Collud Archaeological Complex – Lambayeque, Peru: A multi-technique approach using EDXRF, FTIR, XRD, gamma spectrometry, and principal component analysis
Published in Journal of Environmental Radioactivity, 2026
This study analyzes 191 pottery sherds from the Ventarrón-Collud Archaeological Complex (Lambayeque, Peru), including Huaca Zarpán, Huaca Collud, Arenal, and Huaca Ventarrón. The sherds were examined using EDXRF, XRD, FTIR, GRS, multivariate analysis, and digital photomicrography. Results show compositional homogeneity in calcareous clays, indicating consistent raw material sources despite stylistic and stratigraphic variability. Mineralogical differences are attributed to firing and cooling conditions. Variations in weathering between Ventarrón-Arenal and Collud-Zarpán assemblages reflect different depositional environments, highlighting the interplay of cultural practices and post-depositional processes.
